Overview

The circle widens.

The Elephant in the Room is a four-part virtual community engagement series designed to confront the conversations individuals, families, and communities habitually avoid. Building on the proof established by the original Chair Conversations pilot, this series widens the circle — same principle of radical honesty, delivered through weekly virtual sessions open to the broader community.

First session Monday, September 14, 2026. Session time announced with registration.

The Session Arc

Four rooms. Four elephants.

01Outcome · Awareness

The Elephant in My Life

What truth am I avoiding that is costing me growth?

02Outcome · Courage

The Elephant in My Relationships

The things nobody says are the things that hurt us most.

03Outcome · Vision

The Elephant in My Potential

Am I living beneath my capacity? What could be possible if I didn't?

04Outcome · Action

The Elephant in Our Community

What are we not talking about that keeps us stuck as a whole?

Why the elephant stays

The Deficit Contract

Most systems ask people to prove what is wrong with them before anything opens up — show your struggles, lead with your problems, sign the deficit contract. Most people refuse to sign it in public. So the room stays silent, and the elephant stays.

The old contract

Prove your deficit. Then get support.

Focus on what’s wrong. Carry it quietly. Keep the room comfortable.

This room

Name it out loud. Build from what’s strong.

Not what’s wrong with you — what’s strong in you, and what this community can build with it.

How the room is held

Safe Space

A room where honesty carries no penalty.

Honest Conversations

No scripts, no forms, no titles.

New Perspectives

Hearing your own experience reflected in someone else's.

Stronger Together

The collective outcome of individual honesty.

The real circle at Flipping Clippers Barbershop in Dorchester — hands raised after the first Chair Conversation

The real room — Session One at Flipping Clippers, Dorchester. July 2026.

Built on proof

The barbershop already proved it works.

  • ·

Four sessions at Flipping Clippers in Dorchester, and the room filled without a single intake form.

  • ·

Isolation, detachment, and the need to belong surfaced as the common root — across transitional-living residents, young adults, and elders alike.

  • ·

Naming the truth out loud produced measurable change — including at least one participant securing employment as a direct outcome of the series.
